MBA576 - Operations Management


This course focuses on the vital concepts, issues, and techniques for efficient and effective operations to produce goods and services for consumers and/or businesses. Special emphasis is placed on process improvement logistics and supply chain management; planning; organizing and managing or resources to accomplish organizational objectives within a variety of business structures. Topics include operations strategy; product and service design; project management; operational planning; return on investment analysis process design and analysis; capacity planning; lean production systems; purchasing; materials and inventory management, forecasting; quality management and six sigma; and operational analysis and benchmarking.

Course Learning Outcomes
  1. Demonstrate an understanding of the strategic role of operations management in crafting and enhancing a firm’s competitive advantages. [PLO5]
  2. Defend the interdependence of the operations function with the other key functional areas within firms: finance, marketing, organization, corporate governance, etc. [PLO4 and 5]
  3. Recognize opportunities to improve operations and the potential barriers to creating value. [PLO5 and 6]
  4. Analyze operations using a system’s engineering perspective and apply tools and techniques associated with quality management and operations research modeling methods (flow charting, flow analysis, forecasting, statistical process control, lean, six sigma
  5. Interpret model output to assess processes and outcomes and the potential impact of proposed operational changes on systems performance. [PLO6 and 7]
  6. Design and execute a project using the key phases of project management (pre-project approval, project organization and definition, project scheduling and design, and project control and management). [PLO1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7]
  7. Develop information feedback systems to monitor and improve processes and outcomes, including the ability to provide visualization of the data to support end user decision-making. [PLO6 and 7]
