SW 205 - Introduction to Social Work This course examines the multidisciplinary nature of the profession of Social Work. Students learn about the historical roots of social work and influences from other disciplines such as psychology, sociology, anthropology, criminal justice, law, education, and political science, as well as social welfare policy in contemporary practice. The course also examines values and ethics, as set forth by the National Association of Social Work, and practice competencies, as set forth by the Council on Social Work Education. Students are required to engage in 20 hours of service learning to experience the delivery of the Seven Core Functions of Generalist Social Work Practice in a community setting. The Council on Social Work Education’s (CSWE) 10 Competencies of Generalist Social Work Practice are infused in the discourse and assignments in this course. SW 205 is recommended for students earning a degree in the School for Behavioral and Health Sciences and the School for Education.
